The $150 Organic Grocery Shopping List
How to save $10k next year
$20/week on Groceries
That’s how much I spent in 2016 when I was single and living with roommates.
Crockpots were my jam.
Food quality was low.
But the budget was tight.
Fast forward to moving in with my now wife. And she wanted me to start buying organic.
Oh ma! What an interesting conversation that was. The days of $20/week were immediately gone.
But, we managed to keep things in check by shopping this exact list.
Which depending on your location, would likely run you between $150-$200 per week.
And with the avg couple spending about $250 per week on groceries and $100 per week eating out.
We’re talking about the potential to save upwards of $10k next year.
The List
Even today, this is roughly what we buy each week. Except add in a few extra veggies, Siete chips and diapers. I know, WE BOUGIE!

What You’ll Be Eating
Same simple breakfast daily: eggs + oatmeal + fruit to keep mornings cheap, filling, and decision-free.
Lunch & dinner rotate basics: chicken or ground meat (~1 lb/day total for the couple) paired with rice or potatoes and low-cost veggies like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and celery.
Beans replace meat a few meals per week: stretching the budget while keeping protein high, with one planned sweet treat to avoid impulse spending.
This means you’re going to have to cook. We usually do a big cook on Sunday, and we do a big cook on Wednesday or Thursday.
Calories: ~2,200 kcal/day
Protein: ~130 grams/day
Carbohydrates: ~230 grams/day
Fat: ~75 grams/day
For most people, this is going to be right in the maintenance spot.
(Queue the fitness coaches telling me I’m terrible at programming)
Why This Matters
This might seem insufferable to you, which means you probably didn’t read till this point.
But the reality is that with self-control, food is one of the easiest places to find an additional $200/mo for most families.
And if you’re struggling with this list because you’re a picky eater, then sub out some of the foods I suggested for other single-ingredient items.
Avoid prepared food or pre-cut food.
Avoid processed foods; they actually tend to cost more.
Not only could this help trim your budget, but this probably aligns with some of your New Year's resolutions around getting healthy.
This won’t make you rich, but it’ll help you avoid being broke!
That’s it for this week.
Feel free to reply to this and share the ways that your family saves money on groceries.
Best,
Dan
